Breanna was trying to not be caught staring. She wasn’t staring. Not really. She just couldn’t help but notice the girl and her mom who were moving their hands so fast instead of focusing on eating their lunch. And in the crowded Family Retreat lunch room, everyone seemed to be talking except for them. Breanna knew they were using hand motions to communicate, but she couldn’t tell what they were saying to each other. They must be deaf, Breanna decided. But no, another woman was talking to them now and the girl’s mom was nodding her head while she kept moving her hands. The girl was nodding now, too. Maybe only the girl was deaf. Maybe her mom could hear. Breanna knows what it is like to be different. She has a disability, too. And that’s why Breanna left her place at the table to go meet the girl. Amy. The girl’s name is Amy, her mom said. “My name’s Breanna,” Breanna said. Breanna watched Amy’s mom use her hands to tell Amy what she had just said. Amy looked like she could be a good friend to Breanna, but it would be pretty hard to do all kinds of friend stuff with her if her mom had to be there, too. And that is how Breanna got the idea to learn Sign Language. If she learned how to communicate with Amy using her hands, then they could get to be good friends all on their own. And that is just what they did.
